Smart Material Corporation, with its affiliated company Smart Material GmbH, is a developer and manufacturer of advanced piezo composite materials and electronics for operating systems based on these materials.

Smart Material Corporation was founded in 2000 in Sarasota, Florida. Based in Dresden, Germany, Smart Material GmbH was founded shortly after in July 2002.

Our mission: To provide advanced piezo composites and required electronic systems for commercial, research and educational applications in high quantity and high quality.

Innovation-driving materials

Smart Material Corp.’s piezo composites are used in a wide range of devices, including actuators, sensors, ultrasound transducers, and vibration energy harvester. Piezo composite materials pave the way for design innovation and new applications. They are instrumental in optimizing energy consumption, weight, cost and efficiency of new products.

Worldwide distribution of our products

Smart Material sells its products and services worldwide. Our team serves a variety of market segments in the industrial, aerospace, defense, and energy-autonomous microsystems sectors. A specialized and growing market segment is academic, corporate and government research and development customers. Smart Material supports this sector with an extensive database of publications, user forums and social media channels. We also provide general engineering services for the design and development of new piezoceramic composite materials and systems.

Our focus

In terms of applications, we focus on ultrasound for non-destructive testing (NDT) and medical diagnostics, sonar, structural health monitoring (SHM), energy harvesting from vibrations, as well as morphing and de-icing systems for aerospace.

Senior Expertise

New material technologies, such as our advanced piezo composites, require special user support. At Smart Material, we therefore have a dedicated senior team of application engineers who are available to assist our customers with all of their design-in tasks and who also provide engineering services. Thanks to our research cooperation with the Fraunhofer IKTS and NASA’s Langley Research Center, we have established Smart Material as a leading international company with a clear focus on new materials technologies.

Smart Material’s manufacturing facilities are located in Dresden, Germany, also home to the Fraunhofer Institute for Ceramic Technologies and Systems (IKTS), one of the world’s leading research institutes in the field of revolutionary ceramic materials. As the center of the German semiconductor industry, the city of Dresden offers an outstanding infrastructure for cross-disciplinary materials technology.
