Smart Material has successfully achieved ISO 9001 certification—a significant milestone that officially recognizes the company’s high quality standards.
In an interview, the team that prepared for the audit explained that the certification did not require any fundamental changes but served as a valuable confirmation of the quality-conscious practices already in place. “The quality was already there—the certification made it visible, documented it, and made it even more transparent for all employees and customers,” said Rita Döbel, who guided the team through the entire process as an external consultant.
Particularly noteworthy: employees impressed during the audit not only with their expertise but also with their open and confident demeanor. “Despite the usual initial nerves, it was quickly evident how secure everyone is in their processes. That contributed to a very positive audit outcome,” emphasized QMR Ingmar Zelle.
For customers, the certification provides added reassurance: processes are now more clearly documented and are regularly reviewed. At the same time, it opens up new opportunities for Smart Material—for example, in medical technology or automotive industry research projects.
However, ISO certification is not an endpoint but the beginning of a continuous journey: annual surveillance audits help further improve processes and steadily expand the company’s high-quality standards. The company’s central “Development” division will also be more closely involved going forward, allowing for ongoing optimization.
“The certification confirms what we, as a team, have long stood for: quality, reliability, and collaborative work,” summarized CEO Bill Esler.
